Transform your mindset and learn the crucial communication skills so you never need to check the translator in the middle of your Spanish conversations when you go completely blank.
You want to SPEAK Spanish to truly connect with friends, family, coworkers, and community members. You believe that being bilingual is necessary in today’s world for both professional and personal growth. You want to belong and feel accepted by your Spanish speaking peers.
You may have learned Spanish in school ages ago, you are consistently on Duolingo or watching Youtube videos about Spanish grammar, and you make sure to watch Netflix or listen to music in Spanish, but when it’s time to open your mouth to speak – your mind goes blank and you freeze.
You walk away from conversations with your mind filled with self-doubt, negative thoughts, feeling of being “not good enough,” comparing yourself to others, or even thinking, “Maybe my brain just doesn’t work that way.”
You’ve done all the “right” things to learn a language according to the internet and Reddit threads, but somewhere along the way you learned how to consume Spanish rather than produce it.
Here’s how this usually shows up:
– You can recognize words when reading or listening, but struggle to remember what to say in the moment
– You rehearse what you want to say in your head and it sounds good, until the moment comes and you’re lost for words
– You can remember individual words, but struggle to put full sentences together
– You gave up trying to speak and told yourself that you are the problem
– Your fear of messing up and not being perfect traps you into silence and you switch to English the moment you feel uncomfortable
There is nothing wrong with you. You are not bad at Spanish. You’re an intelligent professional who is learning Spanish halfway and paying for it in lost connections, silent nods, and self-doubt That’s the whole problem. And none of it is fixed by more vocabulary and flashcards.
It feels like you are alone, I was there.
When I grew up with Spanish, I learned vocabulary, learned grammar, but I still froze in conversations. What helped me unfreeze wasn’t more exposure, practice, or drills, it was understanding the mindset shifts to stop talking down on myself and learning crucial communication skills beyond grammar and vocabulary that helped me pivot when I didn’t know a word.
